The time that you had to buy a special game-rig and spend a lot of money for a high-quality gaming experience is long gone. Thanks to the iPhone (and iPod touch) and the App Store, you can get an excellent mobile gaming experience for just a few dollars (or for that matter), or even less.

In fact, many of the games out there are free. But you can get great games for nothing, or is the & # 39; free & # 39; section of the App Store just a sloppy excuse to bomb you with in-app purchases?

The answer is, of course, both. The trick is to find the gems between the snails, and what follows are our picks of the bunch: our top free iPhone games, presented in random order, including both old classics and brilliant cutting-edge recent releases. We even recorded a VR game for you ... are not you lucky?

New this week: Bendy in Nightmare Run

Bendy in Nightmare Run You dump into a world of seriously ruined cartoons. Crispy audio and glitchy black-and-white images remind of the animation of the 1920s, but with content that was apparently brought in from a nightmare dimension.

On every level your hero runs to the screen, on the run for a haunting horror and his legions of small - but equally ferocious - followers. You sweep between three lanes and collected weapons behind you with a tap. Do this enough and your aggressor finally gets the hint and sneaks away.

In gameplay terms, there is not much that you have not seen before - Bendy is more or less a 180 degree twisted Temple Run - but the presentation alone makes the game worthy of an installation. Be aware that this nightmare run has a level of difficulty which, if it is not nightmarish, is at least very challenging.
